The men

Five thousand men to a legion, eighty to a century, eight to a tent. A ranker swore an oath rather than signing a contract, carried thirty kilos, and dug a fort at the end of every day's march before he was allowed to eat. Above him the ladder was real: a farmer's son who was steady and did not die could reach the centurionate, and a few reached the equestrian order from there.
